ECR Competition 2017

Early Career Researcher Competition (ECR) 2017
5th September 2017

ACIC and the Marie Curie Initial Training Network endure are keen to develop awareness among young engineers of the importance and potential of research in composites in construction and are teaming up to provide yet another invaluable opportunity to early stage researchers working in the field, to showcase their work. ECR 2017, held during the Advanced Composites in Construction (ACIC) Conference 2017, provides a unique platform for research students to discuss and exchange ideas with their peers and engage with key academic and industry leaders.

When submitting their ACIC paper for peer-review, early career researchers who are planning to present their paper at the ACIC 2017 conference should indicate whether they also wish to apply for the ECR 2017 competition and submit a project synopsis as detailed below. The ACIC 2017 Organising Committee will then select particular applicants with accepted papers to additionally present their research during a special poster session at ACIC 2017 in Sheffield.

Who is this aimed at?

The competition is aimed at the next generation of structural engineers who are enthusiastic about FRP structural engineering and ready to make their mark. By holding the event as part of the ACIC conference, this provides a great networking opportunity with industry professionals and is an excellent addition to your CV. ECR 2017 is open to those with less than five years (at the date of the conference) full time, or equivalent, research experience in FRP structural engineering. Delegates may be students registered for research degrees, employees of research organisations or those working in practice.

Entry requirements

When submitting the ACIC paper for review, applicants must also submit a short project synopsis (maximum of 1 page A4 in 10pt font). The synopsis should include:

  • Name
  • Research organisation
  • Stage of research (e.g. 2nd year PhD student)
  • Title of ACIC conference paper
  • Project title
  • Project objectives and goals
  • Brief description
  • Potential for application of results
  • Funding body (if appropriate)

Delegates must be prepared, if selected, to present their project in poster form at the ACIC conference during a special session on Tuesday 5th September 2017. The winners will be voted by Committee attending the conference and the winning entries will be announced during the conference dinner on 6th September.

Researcher poster presentations

Researchers will be notified in summer 2017 if their paper has been accepted for presentation during the ACIC conference and also whether they have been chosen to make an additional poster presentation.

Prizes

The winning early career researcher will receive a cash prize of £100. Two runners up will receive £50 each.

Cost

ECR 2017 is taking place as part of the Advanced Composites in Construction conference and applicants must register for the conference at www.acic-conference.com in the normal way.
